Darmasiswa Program

Darmasiswa program of Semarang State University is a follow-up program initiated and generally managed by the Bureau of Planning and International Cooperation of the Ministry of National Education to educate foreign students studying in Indonesia about Bahasa Indonesia and cultural arts of Indonesia. Foreign students are then expected to promote Indonesia as objective and as balanced as possible in their respective countries.
Darmasiswa program is a non-degree program lasting for one year. It was first held by Semarang State University in the academic year 2006-2007. During the program, participants are prohibited to work, do research and practical political activities.

Darmasiswa

In Semarang State University students will have opportunity to study Bahasa Indonesia, Indonesian culture and literature, fine arts, Indonesian traditional music and dance, culinary, clothing, and other subjects according to their interest.

For one year study period, students are expected to learn: (1) Bahasa Indonesia, (2) Indonesian culture (3) Indonesian Batik art, (4) Indonesian and Javanese traditional music, and dance, (5) and other optional subjects which students can freely choose, such as: Javanese language, Indonesian geography and history, sports, wood carving, painting, etc.
Teaching and learning in class is usually held in the morning between 09:00 am to 12:30 pm from Monday until Friday.
At another time, students are expected to interact with regular students to broaden and enhance their skills in acquiring Bahasa Indonesia. On special occasions, Darmasiswa participants are also invited to visit some tourist attractions in Central Java.

Objectives and Benefits
The objective of the Darmasiswa program is to disseminate the Indonesian language and culture to the other countries. In addition, it functions as the reciprocity of a number of scholarships which has been being offered by other countries to Indonesia and also as a form of cultural diplomacy.

The Implementation of Learning Activities
A. The Academic Year 2006/2007
The Darmasiswa program in the academic year 2006/2007 was the first program held by Semarang State University which was enrolled by 2 (two) students:
1. Ms. Eleni Grafakou from Greece
2. Ms. Oxana Yatsenko from Russia
Both students have taken basic language course which was taught within 16 meetings for each semester, including:
1. Listening and Speaking
2. Reading
3. Socio Cultural
4. Writing
The results of learning activities that have been obtained directly by the two students are:
1. The mastery of Bahasa Indonesia actively both orally and in written.
2. The knowledge of cultural diversity that exists in Indonesia, especially in Java including the pattern of community life in Semarang.
3. The mastery of dance, especially Denok Semarang dance.
4. The mastery of Batik making skill.
Both students were officially graduated from Semarang State University on June 2, 2007.

B. The Academic Year 2007/2008
The Darmasiswa program in the academic year 2007/2008 was the second program held by Semarang State University which was enrolled by 5 (five) students:
1. Ms. Benjawan Bunkongtong from Thailand
2. Ms. Pacharaphon Meekhlai from Thailand
3. Ms. Kwanta Huplong Nakhon Sri Thammarat from Thailand
4. Mr. Jacobs Shamiel Cape Town from South Africa
5. Mr. Andrea Fabio Frati from Italy

The above Darmasiswa students have studied in Semarang State University for two semesters from August 28, 2007 until May 16, 2008.

C. The Academic Year 2008/2009
The Darmasiswa program in the academic year 2008/2009 was the third program held by Semarang State University which was enrolled by 5 (five) students:
1. Ms. Flora German from Hungary
2. Ms. Chanipa Kalinnasak from Thailand
3. Ms. Helena Galkova from Slovakia
4. Mr. Juan Andres Marcial Coba from Ecuador
5. Mr. Santiago Paul Erazo Andrade from Ecuador

D. The Academic Year 2009/2010
The Darmasiswa program in the academic year 2009/2010 was the fourth program held by Semarang State University which was enrolled by 3 (three) students:
1. Ms. Brigitta Kovacs from Hungary
2. Ms. Martina Rysova from Czech Republic
3. Ms. Izabela Klusova from Czech Republic

D. The Academic Year 2010/2011
The Darmasiswa program in the academic year 2010/2011 is the fifth program held by Semarang State University which is enrolled by 10 (eleven) students:
1. Mr. William Hain from Australia
2. Ms. Anna-Lena Brosell from Germany
3. Ms. Brigita Kovacs from Hungary
4. Ms. Hanna Dabrowska from Poland
5. Ms. Liubov Ponomarenko from Russia
6. Ms. Eva Vidlickova from Slovakia

9. Ms. Tiwaporn Jankaew from Thailand
10. Ms. Margit Miklos from Hungary
